The new floor is only as good as what is under it, so tear-out is part of almost every job we do.

Carpet comes up with the pad, the staples and the tack strip. Tack strip nails left in the subfloor will push up through underlayment, so we pull every one. Old laminate usually comes up clean because it floats. Sheet vinyl and glued tile take more time, and we quote those after we see them.

One warning. Sheet vinyl and floor tile in homes built before the 1980s can contain asbestos in the backing or the mastic. If your house is that age and the old floor is vinyl or 9 inch tile, we will ask about testing before we disturb it. That is the rule, and we follow it.

Once the floor is bare, we scrape any old adhesive and vacuum the subfloor. Everything goes in our truck and leaves the property the same day. No dumpster in your driveway. Then we check flatness and move on to subfloor leveling if the floor needs it.

Can laminate go over concrete?
Yes. We check moisture first, then lay a 6-mil poly vapor barrier with taped seams, then underlayment, then the floating floor. The slab needs to be flat within about 3/16 inch over 10 feet.
Can you install laminate over my old floor?

Why do you leave a gap at the walls?
Laminate expands and contracts with humidity. We leave a 1/4 to 3/8 inch gap at every wall and fixed object and hide it under base or quarter round. Without it, the floor peaks or buckles.
How long does laminate floor installation take?
One or two rooms usually take a day. A whole main floor of 1,000 to 1,500 square feet runs two to four days, including tear-out and trim. Leveling compound can add a drying day.
When is laminate floor replacement better than repair?
If one or two planks are damaged and you have spares, we repair. If water has swollen boards across a room or the wear layer is gone in traffic lanes, laminate floor replacement is usually the better value.
